POEM OF A GIRL IN THE CANCER WARD

I fell in love with the most beautiful girl
She was wearing a smile, and it lit up the world
She had on this gown that opened in back
She weighed 92 pounds, or something like that
Her eyes had dark rings, and her arms were real thin
But the thing that got me was that wonderful grin.

She didn't have hair, but she had a cute head
And she looked sweet as could be on that hospital bed.
Her skin was transparent; I could see her veins
But her eyes and her smile showed no hint of pain

Her eyes were full of life and love
Her skin was soft, and white as a dove
I brought her flowers, and when she asked why
"You're pretty," I said, "I just want to say hi."

She took the flowers and inhaled their smell,
And on to her lap a petal fell.
"She loves me," I thought, and waited in dread
For another to fall - "She loves me not," instead.

But love me she did, for no other did fall,
And soon we were walking the hospital halls.
We talked of life and death and love and the sun,
The she took my hand, and my heart was won.

We read to each other, and wrote letters and poems,
And we talked about when she'd be going home.
And the days flew by, but she wouldn't get well,
But if it brought her down, I couldn't tell.

Our time spent together always ended too fast
And we were always afraid it would be the last
And one day it was, and I sat by her bed
And I held her hand, and I stroked her cute head

When she left this world, I stayed and cried
When she passed away, a part of me died
But there's a part of her, in my heart, still alive.
